During my summer holiday I drew some realistic sketches  of animals that interest me. Whilst googling for "animal artists" I found some interesting images by Malcolm Bucknall. These featured characters with human bodies but with animals' heads so I decided to create my own characters from my original sketches.

Peregrine Falcon Head on a World War 2 Soldier's Body

Peregrine falcons are born hunters/killers so I thought a soldier's body was appropriate (a trained killer).

Red Panda Head on a Baby's Body

Red pandas are gentle and are seen as adorable so I thought a baby's body would be best suited (something most people adore).

Wolf Head on a Biker's Body:

Wolves are usually in packs so I thought a biker's body would be appropriate (a person who usually travels in a group).

 Inugami Concepts

 

This is a completed page of a comic strip I’m working on for a brief to create artwork which includes text as well as imagery. It depicts the story of an animal-hating boy who is punished by the purple-eyed dog spirit, called Inugami, after seeing him end the life of a stray puppy. Inugami places a curse on the boy turning him into a dog and everyone he knows forgets who he is. To break the curse the boy must realise the error of his ways within a year or die. The comic strip is hand-drawn using fine liner and watercolour. It reads from right to left.

Urban Poster

 

I was required to provide urban images for this brief in order to create painted illustrations for advertising posters. This image depicts roof tops along with Parr Hall, which I photographed from Suez Street in my home town. I created a painting using acrylic paint, in the style of Akash Bhatt, then I scanned it into Photoshop. I produced the mock poster below for a Tate Modern Exhibition with the original photo faded on top to show a comparison.

Out of Darkness

The only brief for this double page spread was a choice of titles. At first I thought of things relating to the word darkness such as monsters and horror so I created concepts for that. I also thought of space since it’s like an empty void of darkness which is my final outcome. Hand drawings of the spaceman and monster were loaded into Photoshop to create this. I have depicted it as a film with imaginary ratings and quotes from different film critics and voice actor examples.

National Trust Poster

For this brief I was asked to design a poster for the National Trust. The purpose is to advertise something that would appeal to the younger generation. I researched all the different outdoor activities the trust offers. From this I developed characters for each activity and a logo which I scanned individually.  Finally I grouped the images together into one poster and applied coloured using Photoshop.

These characters are inspired by illustrators from different animated series. They were hand drawn then scanned to be coloured and shaded using Photoshop.

Zip and Sins

"Zip"

 

The brief told me to create work involving or relating to listening. I decided to use synaesthesia to create faces from different types of music. "Zip" is a response to the song “Super Shooter” by RIP Slyme and "Sins" is a response to the song "Red Fraction" by MELL.

 For "Sins" I created the final outcome using my drawing tablet to add extra details.

Demon Zip Face and Masked Shadow Face

The above illustration is partially based on a portrait of myself.

I drew these illustrations in response to the brief entitled ‘Identity’. For this I used the concept of “people may seem nice (on the outside) but really they are nasty (on the inside)”. Using Photoshop I coloured and added shadow on scanned copies of these illustrations.

Fighter Alien

This is a design concept for an alien character of mine. The original hand drawn image was produced for a printing project. I have further developed this image by scanning it into Photoshop and adding colour and shading. I also wanted to show how the character would move. I haven't started the animation part of my course yet but I managed to create a simple animation using Photoshop's animation function. Each frame in the animation was sketched on my laptop using a drawing tablet. Using this as a base I hope to add more details later on.

Abstract

The whole class made sketches of the human form which we cut out and hung up to form abstract shapes.  I then made sketches of these to create images similar to the work of Henry Moore. This particular image is coloured using green ink and coloured pastels.
